A log home in Aspen has to survive two extremes at once. From late fall into spring, deep Roaring Fork snow packs against the lower walls, buries decks, and sheds off steep roofs onto log ends and chink lines, keeping the bottom of the home damp for months. Then, on the very same building, the high-altitude sun goes to work — at 7,908 feet the UV is intense enough to bleach and break down a south-facing finish while the snow is still melting on the north side.

That combination is why a finish that looks fine in town can be failing badly up a side valley. Our Aspen work is built around it: we seal the lower courses and roof-shed zones tight against meltwater, then load extra UV-blocking coats onto the sun-blasted south and west walls. Treating snow and sun as separate problems on the same wall is the only way to keep an Elk Mountain log home looking and performing the way its owners expect.
