Gothic is famous among snow scientists for a reason: the valley collects some of the deepest and longest-lasting snowpack anywhere in Colorado. For a log cabin, that means snow leaning against the walls not for weeks but for months, with a slow, steady band of meltwater working along the snow line the entire time. The lowest few feet of any wall here live a completely different life than the wood above them, and that snow-contact zone is where the real battle against moisture and rot is fought.

On Gothic cabins we focus intently on that zone, keeping chinking flexible and the lower courses sealed and sound so a winter's worth of snow contact does not quietly hollow out the base of a wall.

Most of Gothic's buildings are historic and used seasonally, which stacks two challenges on top of each other. First, the wood is old, often softened, with brittle finishes and settled joints that need a patient, preservation-minded hand. Second, the cabins sit empty and buried through the coldest months, so nobody is there to catch the small failures that deep cold and heavy snow can cause. We address both by combining gentle, historically sensitive repair with a disciplined schedule of pre-winter sealing and early-summer inspections once access returns.

It is easy to think of Gothic only in terms of snow, but the high-altitude sun here is fierce, and it comes doubled by glare bouncing off the endless white in spring. That combination bleaches and breaks down finishes on exposed walls faster than owners expect for such a cold place. We use UV-blocking, breathable stains that can stand up to strong sun while still letting old wood dry, protecting Gothic's historic cabins from both extremes at once.
