Gypsum holds the distinction of being the lowest and warmest town in the Eagle valley, and that climate leaves a clear mark on log homes. Hot, dry summers pull moisture out of the wood aggressively, and as logs dry they check: cracking along the grain, sometimes deeply. Those checks are the single biggest maintenance issue we see in Gypsum, because the ones that open facing upward catch every rain and snowmelt and channel it into the middle of the log.

A big part of good log home care here is simply staying ahead of checking, sealing the vulnerable ones during each staining cycle so water and insects never get the foothold they are looking for.

The same open, sunny terrain that makes Gypsum a warm spot in the valley also subjects log walls to relentless ultraviolet exposure. South- and west-facing walls lose their finish and begin to gray and chalk faster than most owners anticipate, and once bare wood is exposed the sun degrades the surface fibers themselves. We counter this with premium UV-blocking, heat-stable stains and by scheduling the brightest elevations for more frequent refreshes than the shaded sides ever need.

Wind moving through the lower valley picks up fine dust and grit, and over time that airborne abrasive works like light sandpaper on the windward walls of a home, thinning finishes and packing debris into joints. It is a subtle form of wear that adds up season after season. On Gypsum projects we identify the prevailing windward exposures and give them extra protection, so the finish holds even where the valley's wind and dust are hardest on it.
