Project Details
This stunning TJ's Log Home in Bailey, Colorado had fallen into disrepair after years of deferred maintenance. Nestled in the foothills of Park County at approximately 7,750 feet elevation, the home's logs had become weathered, grayed, and vulnerable to moisture damage. The original stain had deteriorated significantly, leaving the wood unprotected against Colorado's intense UV radiation, freeze-thaw cycles, and driving mountain snowstorms.
The Challenge
Bailey sits along the North Fork of the South Platte River in a transitional zone between the Front Range foothills and the high country. Log homes here face a unique combination of challenges: intense solar exposure on south-facing walls, significant temperature swings that can range 50+ degrees in a single day, heavy spring snowmelt, and the ever-present threat of wood-boring insects at this elevation. This particular home showed classic signs of prolonged neglect — the stain had failed, the chinking between logs had cracked and pulled away, and moisture was beginning to penetrate the log walls.
Our Restoration Process
Step 1: Media Blasting with Crushed Glass
The first step in any serious log home restoration is stripping the old finish down to bare wood. We used our professional media blasting equipment with crushed recycled glass as the blasting media. Crushed glass is our preferred medium because it's aggressive enough to remove even the most stubborn old stains and grayed wood fibers, yet gentle enough to preserve the log profiles without gouging or damaging the wood. The result is a clean, bright surface that looks almost like freshly milled timber — you can see this raw wood stage in our work-in-progress photos below. Every square inch of log surface was stripped clean, exposing healthy wood ready to accept new stain.
Step 2: Sashco Transformation Log & Timber Stain — Goldtone Medium
For the staining phase, we selected Sashco Transformation Log & Timber Stain in the Goldtone Medium color. Transformation is a premium, high-performance stain specifically engineered for log homes. It features advanced UV inhibitors and flexible resins that move with the wood as it naturally expands and contracts through the seasons. The Goldtone Medium shade provides a warm, honey-golden tone that enhances the natural beauty of the wood grain while offering excellent protection. This particular color is one of the most popular choices for Colorado mountain homes because it complements the surrounding Ponderosa pine forests and blends beautifully with the natural landscape.
Step 3: Log Jam Buff Chinking
To seal and protect the joints between logs, we applied Log Jam chinking in Buff. Proper chinking is critical for log homes — it creates a flexible, weather-tight seal that prevents air infiltration, moisture penetration, and insect entry. Log Jam is a high-performance sealant that stretches and compresses as the logs settle and shift with temperature changes, maintaining a watertight bond year after year. The Buff color was chosen to complement the Goldtone Medium stain, creating a cohesive, polished appearance across the entire exterior.
About Bailey, Colorado
Bailey is an unincorporated community in Park County, Colorado, located along U.S. Route 285 about 45 miles southwest of Denver. The area is a popular destination for those seeking mountain living with reasonable access to the Front Range metro area. Bailey and the surrounding communities of Pine, Conifer, and Shawnee are home to hundreds of log homes and cabins, many of which were built in the 1980s and 1990s and are now due for comprehensive restoration. The area's elevation, dry climate, and intense sunlight make regular log home maintenance essential to preserving these properties.
The Results
The transformation is dramatic. What was once a weathered, graying log home is now a showpiece property with rich, warm tones and crisp, clean chinking lines. The Goldtone Medium stain brings out the character of each log, while the Buff chinking provides a beautiful contrast that highlights the home's architectural details — including the impressive river rock foundation, the grand log columns, and the expansive covered deck and balcony areas. This home is now fully protected against the elements and will maintain its beautiful appearance for years to come with proper maintenance.
