Mt. Crested Butte sits at the base of one of the snowiest mountains in the state, and the snow does not just fall here, it piles up and stays. When several feet of snowpack lean against a log wall for months on end, the constant contact and the slow meltwater at the snow line push moisture into joints, checks, and the bottom courses of logs in a way lower towns never experience. The lower few feet of a wall often need very different attention than the same wall six feet up.

On base-village homes we focus hard on the snow-contact zone, keeping chinking flexible and tight and finishes intact right down to grade, because that is where deep-snow moisture does its quiet damage over a long winter.

This is genuinely high-alpine territory, and log homes here take punishment from two directions at once. Deep, sustained cold contracts logs and sealants until anything rigid cracks, while the thin air and intense high-angle sun, doubled by glare reflecting off bright snowpack, bleach and break down finishes on the exposed walls. We specify products rated for both extremes: chinking that stays flexible in deep cold and stains that hold their UV protection against sun coming from above and below.

The stretch of reliably warm, dry weather at 9,375 feet is short, and every prep, blast, and finish coat has to be timed to it. A staining project that would be routine in a lower town becomes a scheduling puzzle here, where an early snow can shut down the work. We plan Mt.
