Most people assume snow is the biggest threat to a Colorado log home, but down in the Uncompahgre Valley the opposite is true. Montrose sits in high desert at 5,807 feet, where summer humidity routinely drops into the teens and twenties. That bone-dry air slowly draws moisture out of the logs, and as the wood loses water it shrinks and splits along its length — the cracks we call checks. Left open, those checks funnel rain and snowmelt straight into the heart of the log, where rot and carpenter ants take hold.

Because of that, our Montrose work focuses heavily on sealing checks and keeping a sound, flexible finish on the wood. We fill the upward-facing checks that collect water, re-coat thirsty south and west walls before they gray out, and choose products that stay elastic as the logs move with the dry-climate swings. It is a genuinely different playbook than the one we use in the snowy high country an hour to the east.

With roughly 245 sunny days a year and thin high-desert air, Montrose gives log walls almost no relief from UV. We consistently see homes here where the north and east sides still look good while the south and west walls have faded to silver-gray and lost their finish entirely. That uneven wear is the signature of intense Western Slope sun, and it means a smart maintenance plan rarely treats every wall the same.

On Montrose projects we put extra coats and more frequent attention on the sun-blasted elevations, often re-staining those faces a year or two ahead of the shaded sides. Catching UV damage while it is still just faded finish — before the wood fibers themselves break down — is the difference between a quick recoat and a full media-blast-and-restore.
