Pitkin traces its roots to the silver boom of the early 1880s, and some of its log cabins have stood through more than a century of high-country winters. Working on a structure like that is preservation as much as maintenance. The wood may be softened or punky in places, old finishes have long since failed, and joints have settled and shifted over generations. The goal is not to make an old cabin look brand new, but to make it sound and protected while keeping the character that makes it worth saving.

We start by sorting genuinely sound logs from those that need splicing or replacement, then re-chink settled joints and apply breathable finishes chosen to guard the wood without erasing its history.

At 9,200 feet in a narrow, shaded creek valley, Pitkin gets serious winter. Deep, sustained cold contracts logs and cracks any rigid chinking, while heavy snowpack leans against cabins for months and lingers into late spring. As that snow finally melts, the water goes looking for every open check and loose joint. We use chinking rated for extreme cold so it stays flexible when it matters, and we time inspections for late spring to catch snowmelt damage before it works deeper into old wood.

Many Pitkin cabins are remote and used seasonally, sitting empty and unwatched through the hardest months of the year. That is exactly when small problems grow: a gap in the chinking lets in weather, a water-holding check starts to rot, a patch of failed finish exposes bare wood to sun and snow. Because no one is there to notice, we build a schedule of pre- and post-season checks for Pitkin owners, so their historic cabins get looked after even when the road in is buried.
