Lake City is the heart of Hinsdale County, one of the most remote and least populated counties in the lower 48, and its historic district preserves cabins from the 1870s mining era near the shores of Lake San Cristobal. Caring for logwork this old is a preservation exercise: the wood may be soft in places, the original finishes failed long ago, and the joints have settled over generations. The goal is to keep these cabins sound and weathertight for decades more while protecting the historic character that defines the town.

We start each Lake City project by sorting genuinely sound wood from logs that need splicing, then re-chink settled joints and apply breathable finishes that honor the age of the timber.

Set among the San Juan peaks at 8,671 feet, Lake City gets a heavy mountain winter, with snow banked against cabins for months feeding meltwater into the lower log courses come spring. What sets the area apart, though, is sheer distance: reached only over mountain passes, many cabins here sit unwatched for long stretches, so a gap in the chinking or a rotting check has ample time to do damage before anyone notices. We plan Lake City work around that reality, using durable materials that hold up between visits and scheduling seasonal inspections so remote cabins are not left entirely on their own.

Deep mountain cold makes rigid chinking brittle, while the strong high-altitude sun, doubled by glare off the snowpack, fades exposed finishes even in a cold climate. Between the two, the sharp daily swings from sunny days to frozen nights keep logs and sealants in constant motion, working joints loose and widening checks. We use flexible, extreme-cold-rated chinking and UV-blocking, breathable stains, protecting Lake City's historic cabins against snow, cold, and sun together.
