Cañon City is famous for its mild "banana belt" weather, sitting around 5,300 feet where winters are short and the Arkansas River keeps the lower valley relatively temperate. Drive south and west toward Westcliffe and the Wet Mountain Valley, though, and the picture changes fast — higher elevation under the Sangre de Cristo range brings deeper cold, bigger snow loads, and a much shorter season. A log home in Florence or Penrose and a ranch cabin near Westcliffe are living in two different worlds.

We plan maintenance around that split. Down in the Cañon City and Coaldale corridor the longer working season lets us stretch staining and chinking from April into November, while up in the Wet Mountain Valley we treat the window more like high-country towns and chase the warm, dry stretch of summer.

The Royal Gorge and the Arkansas River canyon funnel wind in a way that surprises a lot of new owners. Those channeled gusts dry out windward log faces, scour away weak stain, and drive grit into any gap that has opened in the chinking. Combine that with the area's 300-plus days of sunshine and the semi-arid air, and unprotected logs can gray and check noticeably faster than the calendar would suggest.

For homes near Cotopaxi, Howard, and Texas Creek that sit out in the open, we pay extra attention to the prevailing-wind elevations. Heavier coats of UV-blocking Sashco stain and reinforced Permachink on the exposed faces help these cabins hold up where the wind and sun hit hardest.

A good share of Fremont County's log homes are older rural cabins and ranch buildings, some of them carrying decades of mismatched, failing finishes. On those projects the honest first step is usually media blasting back to clean wood, because no new stain will bond well over chalky, peeling layers or sun-baked checks. Once the surface is sound, we can rebuild the protection from scratch.
