What Is Permachink Lifeline Ultra-2?
Lifeline Ultra-2 is Perma-Chink Systems' flagship exterior log home stain. It is an advanced water-borne (water-based) finish that enriches the natural grain of the wood while delivering some of the best UV protection and color retention available in the log home world. Rather than soaking in and disappearing like a simple penetrating oil, Ultra-2 forms a thin protective film on the surface of the log that is both breathable and elastic — it flexes as the logs expand and contract, and it lets interior moisture vapor escape instead of trapping it.
That film is what protects your logs from UV rays, mold, mildew, and liquid water. The Bronze color we used on this Breckenridge home is a warm, mid-tone brown that shows off the wood grain while evening out the natural color variation across older logs.
The Two-Coat System: Stain Plus Lifeline Advance Topcoat

- Two coats of Lifeline Ultra-2 for color, UV protection, and an even, consistent tone across the whole home.
- One clear coat of Lifeline Advance (in gloss or satin) as the protective topcoat.
Think of Lifeline Advance like the clear coat on a car. It does not add color — it seals and protects the colored stain underneath, adds depth and a subtle sheen, makes the walls easier to keep clean, and takes the brunt of the weather so the color coat lasts longer. Why Prep Matters: Media Blasting First
No finish — not even Ultra-2 — will bond properly to a dirty or previously coated surface. On the Breckenridge project we stripped the home back to clean, bare wood with media blasting, then sanded it smooth before a single drop of stain went on. Proper prep is the single biggest factor in how long a finish lasts, which is why it is the foundation of every log home restoration we do.
How to Maintain a Lifeline Ultra-2 Finish
The beauty of the Ultra-2 and Advance system is how simple it is to maintain. Because you refresh the clear topcoat before the color coat ever wears through, you avoid the expensive cycle of blasting and re-staining from scratch. Here is the maintenance rhythm we recommend for a Colorado log home:
- Wash the walls once or twice a year. Use Perma-Chink's Log Wash to remove dust, pollen, and mildew. Clean walls last longer and let you inspect the finish.
- Do an annual water-bead test. Spray the walls with a hose. If water still beads up and runs off, the finish is protecting. If it soaks in or the surface looks dull, it is time for a maintenance coat.
- Recoat with Lifeline Advance every 2 to 3 years. At Breckenridge and Summit County elevations, the intense UV means the topcoat wears faster than it would at lower altitude. Reapplying a fresh coat of Advance every two to three years keeps the color coat sealed and looking new.
- Refresh the color only when needed. If the color itself starts to fade after many years, a new coat of Ultra-2 followed by Advance restores it — no blasting required, as long as you have kept up with the topcoat.
Staying on this schedule is far cheaper than a full restoration. It is the same wash-and-recoat approach at the heart of all our log home maintenance work.

Do you have to use a topcoat over Lifeline Ultra-2?

Can Lifeline Ultra-2 be applied over an old finish?
